Flicker Feather (single)

$44.00
Sold Out

Northern Flickers are a type of woodpecker native to the Americas, the Cayman Islands, and Cuba. They are migratory cavity nesters and life-maters, and are easily recognized by their red or yellow shafted wings and spotted chest plumage.

This beautiful bird chose our doorstep for her final resting place during the holidays last December. With no signs of injury or harm, it was difficult to tell how she’d died. Her bright orange feathers starkly contrasted the cold winter ground and I stared in speculation at the events that led her to die here, in this exact place. Being skilled in animal husbandry and in facilitating matters concerning death, I quickly set to planning her transition. With a dear friend by my side we executed her sacred burial complete with song, smoke, prayer, petals, and a lot of respect for all living things.

Flickers are associated with many positive qualities across different cultures, and commonly with the elements of air and fire. The feather gifts that remain from her life are reminiscent of her dynamic elemental nature: the mutability and stillness of Air and how swiftly it can change, and the tender warmth of fire that can quickly become ferocious. She is simultaneously soft and strong, tender and fierce.

It is an honor to create things that are enduring out of our brief lives.

May these adornments carry the essence of the Northern Flicker when worn, rendering her life an eternal inspiration.
